Used Mini Excavator Buying Checklist
Mini excavators pack a lot of wear points into a compact machine. A good inspection includes the undercarriage, working group, hydraulics, swing system, controls, engine, and attachments.
Inspect pins and bushings
Check bucket, coupler, boom, stick, and cylinder connection points for excessive movement. Some play is expected on used equipment, but large movement can signal upcoming repair work.
Check the undercarriage
Look at track condition and tension, sprocket teeth, rollers, idlers, and final-drive areas. Uneven wear can provide clues about maintenance and operation.
Test swing and travel
Operate swing in both directions, travel forward and reverse, and test each track independently. Listen for abnormal noises and compare travel strength.
Work every hydraulic function
Cycle the boom, stick, bucket, blade, swing, and auxiliary circuit if equipped. Watch cylinders and hoses for leaks and look for slow or erratic functions.
Check attachments and coupler
Buckets, hydraulic thumbs, quick couplers, blades, and auxiliary plumbing all add value but also add inspection points. Verify what is included in the sale.
